Food Group Home Page

Welcome!

The aim of the Food Group is to help, within the Transition Cambridge initiative, to raise awareness of locally grown, sustainably produced food and to demonstrate through our projects what's possible to do to change and transition to a more resilient, earth-friendly diet! We work closely with other organisations such as Cambridge Sustainable Food City and welcome new ideas and energy for future projects. Our members range from vegans to meat eaters and we believe food is a great way to nurture and build communities.

Why we think food is central

Our food production systems are heavily dependent on oil and according to a defra report from 2007, the food and drink sector is responsible for 17% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions. That does not include food imports. See Why food is a transition issue for more information.

The Food Group is a member of Cambridge Sustainable Food. On the 23rd of October 2012 the Food Group decided to sign the Food Sovereignty principles.

Meetings

The food group is not currently meeting on a regular basis, instead we hope to offer occasional gatherings with the aim of making friends and celebrating our community with the help of food! This could be a meal, picnic, film, topic presentation, skillshare etc. To know when and where our next meeting is happening, check the Transition Events. It is usually advertised as Food Group. All Welcome! We have also a Google group which you may want to check out.

Our current projects

The Food Group has several ongoing projects, here you can explore them all and pick the one is most interesting for you!
