Map of Water Stressed Areas in England

This map shows which areas in England are classified under water stress. The area classified as seriously stressed covers all of Central and Southern England except for some of the South West. Typically they are areas which need to reduce abstraction in order to protect the environment i.e. they are already using too much, even without taking account of the effects of worsening climate change.

This means they are allowed to implement compulsory metering for all customers, provided there is customer support for the measure. Not surprisingly, households with a water meter tend to use less water. It also means that new developments can be required to install water saving appliances so that the household consumption should be close to the long term target for all homes (110 l/person/day).

The map comes from this consultation document from 2021.
