Transition News and Events:

  • Wednesday 10th March: Food Group Meeting

7.30pm in the Geldart on Ainsworth Street. All welcome!

  • Thursday 11th March: Talk: Nature in Transition

Iain Webb will talk about how important it is to include nature in any thinking/acting in the Transition movement, as we work to create new ways of living that are less dependent on fossil fuels and do not contribute to climate change. Iain has been involved with the Cambridgeshire Wildlife Trust for nearly 15 years as a volunteer and paid employee, and was also a founder member of Transition Cambridge. He has had a life long passion for all things ‘natural’ and feels that any sustainable future needs to have nature at its core. After the talk there will be an opportunity to discuss the way forward. 7.30-9ish, Community room in Romsey Mill, corner of Mill Road and Hemingford Road.

  • Tuesday 16th March: Film & Meal: The Powerdown Show

This will be the first public showing of the Powerdown Show in Cambridge. Made by the Cultivate Centre in Dublin, Ireland, the Powerdown Show is a 10-part TV series that takes a fresh and engaging look at the community responses to the converging challenges of climate change and peak oil. Afterwards there'll be a discussion on how to create low carbon communities in Cambridge.

Everyone is welcome to join us for a simple meal at 6pm followed by three episodes of "The Powerdown Show" at 7.15pm in the hall of the United Reformed Church on Cherry Hinton Road (on the corner with Hartington Grove). This event is offered in collaboration with Emmanuel United Reformed Church. Admission free, by donation (£2-4 suggested - thank you!).

If you are free on Monday 15th to do some food preparation for the meal, we'd really appreciate your help (10am, at Emmanuel URC on Trumpington Street, near Fitzwilliam Museum). Please contact Anna if you can help.

Related News and Events:

  • Wednesday 10th March: Talk: Fragile Web: What next for Nature?

Description:This talk by Professor Jonathan Silvertown from The Open University will describe what biodiversity is, why it matters, give an overview of the state it is in and highlight what can be done to ameliorate a situation which has been described as the sixth great extinction in the history of our planet.

Suitable for ages 16+. Tickets are free but limited and must be booked in advance by contacting Gaynor Lindsay-Walters.

6pm, The Open University in the East of England, Cintra House, 12 Hills Road

  • Thursday 11th March: Seminar: People and Sustainability

"It is often said that it is not buildings that use energy, but rather the people in them. It is probably more accurate to say that people cause buildings, and other systems, to use energy. And whilst we have developed an almost complete understanding of the physics of energy flows in buildings, and can model it with some precision, we have a very imperfect knowledge of the impact of human behaviour in causing the building to use energy."

Please come along to listen to Dr Nick Baker talk about the technical development of low-energy buildings, why, when finally in use, these return disappointing results, and what needs to be done at the interface between people and the building. There will be a chance to ask questions after the presentation and refreshments will be provided.

7pm - 8pm Department of Pathology, Tennis Court Road COST: £Free! Sign-up here

Hope to see you out there!

Cheers

Rob
