Transition Cambridge Hi all

Those of you who grow your own veg may know this time of year as "The Hungry Gap", when the last of the winter's crops have been harvested and eaten, and the new season's veg are not yet ready to pick.

Well, here at the Transition Bulletin we have a hungry gap of our own, as the first flush of spring events are over and the summer ones have yet to happen. Which is not to say that things are grinding to a halt; our own regular programme of activities is going strong, as the list below shows!

However if you know of any events in the region that would be of interest to Transitioners, do let us know. Contact details can be found at the bottom of this email.

Transition News and Events

  • Garden Share Update

Over 60% of people registered with Garden Share have now been matched! We still have garden owners waiting for volunteers, and volunteers looking for gardens. For a confidential no-obligation-to-continue chat about the scheme, and whether it's for you, contact Jackie Here are some of the veg growing opportunities we want to fill:

1 A relatively experienced Volunteer Grower needed for a garden in the Foster Road, Trumpington area: the owner is keen to share her 20m X 6m partially cultivated patch and learn more about veg growing.

2 Garden Owner needed in the Madingley Road, Cambridge area: the volunteer grower is keen to learn more about growing vegetables in this climate and would like to work with either another volunteer or the garden owner.

3 Two keen Volunteer Growers are looking for gardens in the CB1 area, around Mill Road/East Road, and Coldham's Lane /Barnwell Road.

If you know of a neighbour, work colleague or friend who would appreciate the taste of fresh, home grown produce and has an under-used garden, please tell them about this scheme, thank you!

  • The Work that Reconnects

The Well-Being Group would like to remind everyone about the evening of The Work That Reconnects, this Tuesday evening. Through experiential exercises we will explore how to use the energy of our emotional responses, reconnect with our passion to act for life and transform our concern for the world into creative engagement. (Organised by the Well-Being Group and lead by Anna McIvor) 7.30-9:30pm at the Friends Meeting House, Jesus Lane. Suggested contribution of £3-4 to cover cost of room hire. All welcome!

  • Food Group

The Food Group will be meeting at 7.30pm at The Geldart. Come along and find out more about our plans for the coming season, including the Transition Cambridge Food Group Stall in June. All welcome.

  • Transition Cafe and Renewable Energy

A reminder that you can meet other transitioners this Thursday, 30th April, from 8pm at 22a Jesus Lane. We'll also be discussing renewable energy and considering forming a Renewable Energy Group within Transition Cambridge. All welcome!

  • Cafe Project's 1st Birthday Party

A year ago, the cafe project opened its doors in the centre of Cambridge, providing a student-run space with comfy sofas, smiling volunteers and ridiculously cheap tea. Over the last year the project has grown, the cakes are yummier, new volunteers have joined, and various societies and groups have come feel at home in the cafe.

We are now ready to celebrate our first birthday, and would like to invite you to the cafe, on Saturday the 2nd of May, at 7:30pm for live music, pass the parcel and tea tasting. We would also like to use this occasion to thank Jesus College for its support, and it's about time we paid up the agreed rent (one peppercorn).

Come meet up with old friends and new volunteers of our brightly coloured "anarchist-squat meets primary school" space, and help us blow the candle out.

  • National Beanpole Week (25 April - 3 May)

Not just an event for tall, skinny folk! National Beanpole Week celebrates Britain's coppiced woodlands - the source of a great deal of our timber and fuel in centuries past - and promotes renewal of this fantastic resource. By switching from imported bamboo canes to British-grown hazel beanpoles, you can help to keep ancient skills alive and make our gardening more sustainable. We are lucky to have a number of suppliers in the region, so do think of buying from them next time you need poles for your beans!

For more info, visit www.beanpoles.org.uk

Thats all for now - hope to see you at one of our get-togethers!

Cheers

Anne
