Wrapping up for Winter

Good evening everyone!

First and foremost- the Transition Cambridge Winter social will be held this Wednesday (the 14th) at the Six Bells just off Mill Road- an excellent way to close out the year! Then if that's not enough, the Cropshare group are having their own winter social on the 19th in Chesterton. Just before that, though, the folks over at Lush have given us a very generous opening in their Charity Pot scheme on Sunday the 18th in Lion Yard- a perfect choice for last minute shopping. And that's the end of the TC events for 2016.

But -rejoice!- the Bulletin will be back in 2017!

So a pair of advance notices- Firstly, on 11th January you'll have the opportunity to learn from Cambridge Carbon Footprint how to use a thermal imaging camera (don't miss, but book essential). Secondly there will be a Hub Meeting on the 23rd of January... back at the Six Bells. If you've already purchased your 2017 diary, pencil it in for an evening of mild planning and intensive catch-ups.

Wishing everyone the very best for the holiday season,

Jonathan and the Bulletin Bunch.

Transition News and Events

Wednesday 14 December: Transition winter social - all welcome

19:00, Six Bells pub, 11 Covent Garden (off Mill Road) CB1 2HS

Time for winter cheer, time to celebrate the year! The Transition winter social is a time to get together with old friends and meet new ones. We'll be in the back room, with plenty of space for everyone; come along any time from 7pm. Seasonal snacks to share are very welcome! The Six Bells, our usual venue for the winter social, won Community Pub of the Year in 2014. Check their website for more info.

Sunday 18 December: Support our Lush charity pot party

11:00-17:00, Lush (Lion Yard)

On Sunday 18th December you can buy hand made cosmetics from Lush and support Transition Cambridge at the same time. Lush have invited us to run a 'charity pot' party in their shop. That means they will donate to us all the revenue (minus tax) from selling 'charity pots' of lotion on that day. We will have a small stall as well so that we can chat with customers and hand out leaflets - we have prepared a flyer with tips for a sustainable holiday season. Do drop in and say hello. Last year Lush raised £4.3 million through their charity pot scheme (Charity Pot raises £4.3 million). We are delighted that they have chosen us to take part this year. Thanks!

Monday 19 December: Cropshare winter social

19:00, Haymakers pub, 54 High Street, Chesterton CB4 1NG

No farm days in December, so Cropshare and friends are getting together in the pub! All welcome. They say 'We'll be the shifty looking types in the corner with the slightly muddy boots.' The Haymakers is a friendly pub which has good food (including vegan pizza) and Milton Brewery beer. More info here

Monday 23 January: Transition Hub Meeting- New Year, New Style!

19:00-21:00, Back room of Six Bells Pub, Covent Garden, Cambridge

Please join us for a Semi-Social-cum-Hub meeting, to gather our thoughts, connections and energies for 2017. Things generally are a little quieter in the dark months of winter, so January's hub meeting will be a little more relaxed. Come along for 7pm to meet other members over a drink, 7.30 -8.30pm: items for discussion: TC Survey and a review of the Lush Charity Pot and Outreach weekend in December, 8.30pm onwards: networking and chat. All welcome, new TC members and familiar faces alike!

Saturday 28 January: Great Shelford's 1st Repair Cafe

14:00-17:00, Scout Hut behind The Great Shelford Memorial Hall, Woollards Lane, Great Shelford CB22 5LZ

Repair Cafes match experienced repairers with people who need stuff fixing. Great Shelford is holding its very first Repair Cafe. You can bring along the following to be repaired and maybe pick up a few repair skills at the same time: small household appliances and electrical items, computers, mobile phones, bicycles, clothes (clean clothes only please) and general bits and bobs. Please book your item in by emailing Linda telling us what the item is and what's wrong with it (if you know!), or you can turn up on the day. The repairers are experienced and can fix most things but there are no guarantees. This is a free event. However, donations to cover venue hire and other costs are very welcome. More details here.

Protect the River Community - Call for support

Boats Are Homes! Campaign update Since last posting here, we at Camboaters and the NBTA (National Bargee Travellers) have been involved in an ongoing campaign to protect our boat dwellers against the council proposed evictions and price hikes. Many of these boats are practising radically sustainable lifestyles with compost loos, solar power and carbon water filtration systems, and many are also involved with social and environmental community work here in Cambridge. We have been receiving very warm support from across the community from many people who are concerned about the increasing sanitation of our urban areas. It would be an enormous help to our cause if you could find the time to fill out the councils consultation form here which has guidance notes attached. More details here.

Cambridge Sustainable Food Hub reaches its first milestone!

Thank you so much to everyone who has pledged to support the Cambridge Sustainable Food Hub. Fantastic news: we have already reached our first £10,000 milestone! There's still a long way to go, of course... to find out more about the project and make your pledge please follow the link. More details here.

Wednesday 11 January: Thermal Imaging Training

19:30-21:30, CCF offices, Women's Resources Centre Hooper St. Cambridge CB1 2NZ

Thermal imaging vividly reveals weaknesses in a building's insulation and air tightness. Find out where homes are wasting heat! These popular training sessions are for people wanting to borrow a thermal imaging camera to examine their own homes, those of friends and to visit others who've requested a survey. In 2 hours you'll learn how to use our two cameras and interpret their images. Free but booking is essential. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. To book send us an email. More details here.

Try out some new Energy saving online tools

Cambridge City is a pilot in the development of a new set of online tools to help residents and public authorities in Cambridge save energy across the city. The online tools include an Awareness tool: enabling residents to upload their energy bill information and analyse their use over time, as well as hints and tips to save energy; a Best Practices tool, which will recommend more specific actions such as improvements in insulation based on your property; and a Renewable Energy simulation tool to calculate the cost of investment and return on investment. Sign up and have a go! More details here.
